AURORA, Ill. (March 20, 2025) – The Schingoethe Center of Aurora University presents “Temma in Aurora,” an original exhibition featuring the work of Chicago-area Artist Tim Lowly, from Tuesday, March 25, through Friday, May 16, 2025. This retrospective exhibition will showcase paintings, drawings, sculpture and installation pieces spanning over 30 years of Lowly’s artistic career.
Tim Lowly is a Chicago area artist, curator, musician and teacher. Over the course of the past 40 years, much of Lowly’s art has been devoted to representing his daughter Temma. She is medically categorized as “multiply and profoundly disabled” and, as such, one who has little personal agency. Lowly’s art depicts Temma as a profoundly meaningful human and as a representative of a significant population that is relatively unseen and unconsidered in our society. Lowly, strongly influenced by European Renaissance and Baroque painting and drawing, creates highly skilled realistic drawings and paintings depicting Temma as a loved, valued, dignified and mystical subject.
Lowly’s artwork has been widely exhibited throughout the United States and around the world. It is included in the collections of institutions such as the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, The Minneapolis Institute of Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He has also had solo exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center, University of Notre Dame’s art museum and Art Space One in Seoul Korea.
Schingoethe Director Natasha Ritsma says, “We look forward to showcasing Lowly’s artwork to an Aurora audience and providing a space to discuss a topic that is often kept in the shadows: what it is like to live with an individual with profound disabilities. Lowly depicts Temma’s presence in his life as a gift and something to be cherished. His sensitive handling of this subject in these stunning paintings and drawings are infused with empathy, kindness and adoration.”
The Schingoethe Center will host an opening reception for “Temma in Aurora” on Tuesday, March 25, from 5 to 7 p.m. Join us for art, refreshments and micro talks by Lowly and other special guest speakers.
The Schingoethe Center of Aurora University is located inside the Hill Welcome Center at 1315 Prairie St. in Aurora, Illinois. The exhibition can be viewed Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
