JERSEY CITY, NJ (August 9, 2024) — Sophia Gliatto, a 2024 Oberlin College and Conservatory graduate, has been awarded a Fulbright for the 2024-25 academic year.

A double major in Hispanic studies and comparative American studies, Gliatto earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) in Mexico and will teach English to students.

“[This] will be a really huge challenge as I primarily have experience teaching Spanish,” Gliatto said, citing volunteer experience through Oberlin’s Spanish in the Elementary Schools (SITES) program. “I’m looking forward to using language lessons to forge personal connections with my students.”

Gliatto previously spent a semester abroad in Argentina taking a philosophy course and teaching philosophy lessons to students at a local elementary school.

“Pursuing a Fulbright will grant me important skills for facilitating relationships with local communities and develop my Spanish-speaking skills in ways that can be carried through in any facet of my life,” Gliatto says.

Gliatto is one of 19 Oberlin alums or recent grads who have been awarded a Fulbright for the 2024-25 academic year, breaking the college’s previous record of honorees in a single academic year.

The Fulbright Program is the federal government’s flagship international academic exchange program. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 talented and accomplished students, scholars, teachers, artists, and professionals of all backgrounds with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad.
