ROLLA, Mo. (July 1, 2024) — Ryan Highfill, a senior in civil engineering and engineering management at Missouri University of Science and Technology from Ozark, Missouri, has been named a 2024 recipient of the Remington R. Williams Award. Highfill is executive director of the Associated Students of the University of Missouri and a former chapter president of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.
The University of Missouri Board of Curators awarded the scholarship to seven students who attend UM System universities: four from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and one each from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Missouri-St. Louis and S&T. Each recipient receives $1,000 and a leadership medal to wear at their graduation. The students will also be recognized during a Board of Curators meeting at their university.
The award recognizes exceptional student leaders who inspire and advocate for their fellow students. To be considered for the award, students must be involved in at least two student organizations and hold a major leadership position in at least one, as well as maintaining a minimum 3.0 GPA.
“Ryan Highfill has been a student dedicated to the well-being and success of the greater S&T population and has a track record of success in impacting and enhancing the culture of the campus,” wrote John Gallagher, former interim assistant vice chancellor for student affairs, in his nomination letter.
“Ryan’s commitment to the S&T community as well as all students within the UM System embodies the values and standards of the Remington R. Williams Award,” wrote Jonathan Affalter, assistant director of student involvement, in his nomination letter. “I look forward to seeing what he accomplishes next year as he seeks to grow his ASUM role even further.” Highfill is the first student from Missouri S&T to serve as executive director of ASUM.
The award is named for Remington R. Williams, who served as student representative to the UM Board of Curators from 2020 until his death in June 2022. The winners reflect the extracurricular involvement and leadership qualities Williams embodied during his time as a student at the UMKC School of Law, where he earned his juris doctor and later at UMSL, where he pursued a master’s degree in business administration.
