Grevings Win Shelterbelt Windbreak Award
Creating wildlife habitat was reason for planting the windbreak
CARROLL, Iowa (Aug. 31st 2023) – Larry and Theresa Greving of Carroll were awarded the Field Shelterbelt Windbreak Award at the 77th Annual Conservation Districts of Iowa Conference held at the Gateway Center in Ames Iowa on Monday, August 28th. The shelterbelt was designed by the local Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) office and consists of American plum, nannyberry, cedars and more. The purpose of the shelterbelt was to reduce erosion from a hill and provide wildlife habitat.
“Larry is a Pheasants Forever member and really wanted to get some high-quality habitat for food and nesting and this shelterbelt will do all that and more. It is three sided providing great protection and consists of several different species,” said Jeff Jensen with Trees Forever, the sponsor of the award.
Diversity and proper design are crucial for agroforestry projects like this that provide multiple benefits. Farmers and landowners interested in similar projects should contact their local Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) office where they can learn more about these practices and potential cost share.
