Handsaker Wins Award for Farmstead Windbreak

26-year-old windbreak still going strong, saving energy

NEVADA, Iowa (Aug. 31st 2023) – Gary and Sue Handsaker of Nevada were recognized at the 77th Annual Conservation Districts of Iowa Conference held at the Gateway Center in Ames Iowa on Monday, August 28th. The Handsakers were bestowed the Farmstead Windbreak Award sponsored by Trees Forever.

“The original windbreak Gary established is amazing, consisting of multiple rows on all three sides of the farm acreage. Species are diverse and include pines, concolor fir, blue spruce, hazelnuts, plum, dogwood and more. After more than 25 years it still is going strong providing enormous benefits,” said Jeff Jensen with Trees Forever.

The original goal in establishing the farmstead windbreak was to decrease energy for the house and barn and provide some shelter for the cattle. Over the years Gary has added to the shelterbelt and now really enjoys the birds and other wildlife that has made the windbreak home.

Diversity and proper design are crucial for agroforestry projects like this that provide multiple benefits. Farmers and landowners interested in similar projects should contact their local Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) office where they can learn more about these practices and potential cost share.
