LAUREL, MD (August 9, 2024) — Faythe Cooper, a 2024 Oberlin College and Conservatory graduate, has been awarded a Fulbright for the 2024-25 academic year.

Cooper, who majored in biology and minored in East Asian Studies, earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Taiwan.

While attending Oberlin, Cooper valued the opportunities she had to engage in experiential learning, which allowed her to learn a foreign language and paved the way for her to pursue a career in global health.

The Fulbright ETA will help her improve her Chinese language proficiency and her cultural understanding; among other things, she is looking forward to honing her conversation skills by exploring cultural festivals.

“Having a better understanding of Taiwan’s cultural beliefs, views, and attitudes will allow me to engage and connect with people more as a physician-scientist,” she said. “Overall, this teaching experience will be invaluable as I embark on my professional journey.”

Cooper is one of 19 Oberlin alums or recent grads who have been awarded a Fulbright for the 2024-25 academic year, breaking the college’s previous record of honorees in a single academic year.

The Fulbright Program is the federal government’s flagship international academic exchange program. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 talented and accomplished students, scholars, teachers, artists, and professionals of all backgrounds with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad.
