LIVERMORE, CA (August 9, 2024) — Elsa Friedmann, a 2024 Oberlin College and Conservatory graduate, has been awarded a Fulbright for the 2024-25 academic year.

Friedmann earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Germany, which will allow her the opportunity to teach English in Hamburg.

The English and history double major participated in Oberlin’s peer tutoring Writing Associates Program, which sparked an interest in how people communicate across both linguistic and cultural barriers.

“Long-term, I want to pursue a career in public arts education, but I’m not entirely certain what shape I’d like that to take,” Friedmann said. “I’m most interested in how major arts institutions connect to broad audiences, [and] in particular how museums can be made more accessible to audiences from a variety of language and cultural backgrounds.”

Friedmann is one of 19 Oberlin alums or recent grads who have been awarded a Fulbright for the 2024-25 academic year, breaking the college’s previous record of honorees in a single academic year.

The Fulbright Program is the federal government’s flagship international academic exchange program. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 talented and accomplished students, scholars, teachers, artists, and professionals of all backgrounds with the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad.
