Adaptive Sports Iowa receives grant from Variety – the Children’s Charity

AMES, Iowa (December 5, 2023) – Adaptive Sports Iowa has received a grant from Variety – the Children’s Charity to fund the purchasing of new equipment for their middle school and high school track and field program for student-athletes with physical disabilities.

Adaptive Sports Iowa is a pillar of the Iowa Sports Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides Iowans with opportunities to live a healthier lifestyle. Adaptive Sports Iowa serves people with physical and visual disabilities by providing accessible sports and recreation opportunities across the state. ASI programs include adult and youth wheelchair basketball, sled hockey, track and field, veteran airgun, wheelchair tennis, the only recognized adaptive cycling team on RAGBRAI and beep baseball for the visually impaired.

The Variety grant will be used to purchase four new racing wheelchairs for middle and high school track and field athletes. This program has been expanding rapidly the past few years, with more students with disabilities wanting to get involved in the sport. The grant from Variety will allow Adaptive Sports Iowa to keep up with growing demand and provide students on the waiting list with the equipment they need to compete.

“We appreciate the opportunities Variety provides for student-athletes with disabilities across the state of Iowa,” says Chuck Long, CEO and Executive Director of the Iowa Sports Foundation. “The grant monies we receive from Variety allows us to purchase more equipment every year so more athletes with disabilities can get involved in track and field during their time in school.”
